Life is like a driving test

I asked others to pray and I also prayed. That I wouldn’t be nervous, that I would dare move in and out of traffic fast enough, that everyone around us would drive in a way that was beneficial and without anything unexpected happening. I prayed for the car to be in good shape and for the expert to be kind.

Well apparently I got the most gentle expert there is, the traffic was good, the car had been having problems in the morning and it had even been to the mechanic, who couldn’t figure out what was wrong. By the afternoon the problem had miraculously dissappeared. I was not nervous at all and dared do what needed doing. Our God is wonderful and as so often in life he gets everything working together for a good outcome – but I had to do the driving. I had to trust.

I had to check the speed and adjust. I had to move and notice things fast enough. I remembered that I had the wrong shoes on but decided not to change since we were about to begin. That was God’s reminder and my choice, which caused me to not feel the pedals as well as in the thinner soled shoes. In life God can set everything just right but we have to decide, according to what he suggests or what we think is best, let’s face it; his horizon is so much bigger than ours! But he leaves us the choice. He get’s things in order but we have to drive.

All his answered prayer doesn’t guarantee success if we miss doing our part. I give Jesus control of the things that are beyond me but he gives me the respect and encouragement to do the things that I can do myself.

What we want is not always what we need. As with driving tests, it is important to fail. That is where much of the training takes place, where the backbone of persevearance is challenged and we learn to prevail, in order to at some point really succeed.
