Last week I met a police man. He was doing his duty but what struck me was a deep sadness, it seemed to go beyond a reaction to the experiences police officers encounter on a daily basis. It seemed deeper.
Since seeing this police man, I had been wondering why I kept thinking about him. He was good looking and I had to start wading through the process of declining what went on in my heart. Being a Christian single mum doesn’t make me immune to good looking men. I have a past and a lot of it had to do with them. It is an issue Jesus is still in the process of healing.
I am at a stage now where I realize the person in mind is not who God has planned for me and after some thought attacks luring me into the confusion and battle of “yes he is and no he isn’t” I usually get a grip on it pretty quickly. Once that is out of the way I can focus on God and what it is that he wants me to do; usually he wants me to pray, to stand in the gap for those in dismay.

Either that or because I need a way to channel my focus away from feeding my own desires, into something worthwhile. God uses the momentum to get my attention anyway. Prayer is the result, either way.
God uses our imagination
So last night on the bus I found myself imagining meeting that police officer again and telling him that I sense a deep sadness in him and that I would like to pray for him, that I would put my hand on his chest (to pray for his heart). In my minds eye that’s what I did.
So far I was under the impression that I was imagining a future possibility, admittedly in an attempt to evade wishful thinking and the resulting confusion/thought battle, but suddenly, as soon as my hand touched his chest, black, vine like tentacles shot out from his heart and wrapped themselves around my hand, pulling me in.
Noticing that this was more than mere imagination I pulled my hand away trying to shake off the clinging tentacles and stretched out to Jesus. Instead of removing them, he said “He needs you.” Which I found odd.
Telling myself that the only thing Jesus could mean by that is that the police man needs me to pray for him, so that’s what I did. At night when I walked around the block with my cat (we walk together a bit before I go back) I realized that it was a serious issue for Jesus, that it was important that I prayed for the police man. Whatever he was going through, he needed divine intervention.
Usually I know instinctively when and what to pray and I also know when it is over. Imagining my hand, it still had those black tentacles clinging to it, so I continued to pray until I realized that for the moment it was enough and began to sing to my God. He is so wonderful. I love the way he communicates with me, using my imagination, I have experienced so much healing in this way.
The healing power of God
This morning at church we started worship and sang ‘Way Maker‘ (by Sinach / cover by Bethel Music). During which we sing that God heals every heart. I knew right away that I was to proclaim the healing power of God over that police mans heart. I saw myself putting my hand on his chest again and as the song progressed I held onto Jesus with my other hand and light flowed from him, through me into those dark tentacles turning them into light which flowed right into that mans heart and throughout his body until he shone brightly.
Then I saw him on his knees crying and I put my hands on his shoulders and prayed. When I asked Jesus to speak to him, Jesus replied that he isn’t ready for that yet. But I know that the healing process has begun. By the time the song finished, I saw that Jesus was tending to the mans wounds and he was lying in a white bed. Jesus said “I will take it from here” so I turned around, walked through a door and it closed behind me.
God speaks in whatever way we are receptive to
And that was that, my assignment to pray for the police man. I have done what I can and God will do the rest. I do not need to dwell on it anymore, allthough this too is a battle.
We need to give our experiences over to God in order to be free of them, so we don’t keep going back, wondering, even doubting. God can use every circumstance, every prayer for good, that I know since he promises to work all things together for the good of those who love him, for those who are called according to his purpose.
I love these God encounters and I know they may seem very odd to those of you who have never experienced the presence of God in this way. Please know that he is God and he is able to communicate in anyway that you are receptive to. I am a very visual, imaginative person, for you it might be different. Ask him and he will show you.
What hinders us from hearing God mainly is doubt and fear or distrust. I would like to encourage you to trust that when God shows you something it is always in love, it always brings some kind of healing or is a step in the healing process for you or someone else. He is encouraging, loving and kind.
I don’t know whether the police man even noticed anything. Much of what God does happens on a much deeper level than we are aware of because he knows the root problem and goes right to the core of it so that from there real healing can occur.
Often we just feel like a weight has dropped off our shoulders or we can deal with things better than before, we can’t even say what has changed sometimes just that the overall feel / attitude / atmosphere seems better.
I will continue to pray for that police man, as the Holy Spirit leads and I am grateful for this encounter. I would really like to know how this has affected that mans life but for me to know isn’t important, only that it has made a difference is, maybe one day the Lord will show me.
What is also important is that we learn to move our fleshly desires (distractions) aside and use these inputs and nudges to move forward in and for the kingdom of God so that through us, Jesus can bring healing to the broken hearted, because that is what he came for.
